When Did You Peak?
If you ask most adults, they would say they peaked at some point in their life when they were younger (this might be completely false, because I did not ask most adults this question before writing about this, so I’m completely assuming ….and you know what happens since I’m assuming. . .I’m making an ass out of u and Ming. Sorry Ming (I don’t know a Ming, unless I do and I forgot I do, which in that case I’m doubly sorry Ming)).
Some will say they are in their best days now, but most will likely reminisce about days when they had more time, or when they were in better physical shape and were better athletes or performers, or traveled more, or before they had kids.
But for serious Christians, their peak is yet to come. And I say serious Christians because many Christians do what most everyone else does, which is to focus on the earthly goods and are unwilling to let go of them for the spiritual goods. But those who truly strive for holiness? They let go of the earthly goods. They continue to grow in holiness, and so by the end of their life they have increased the size of their cup that is filled with God’s grace (St. Therese of Lisieux talks about this analogy, where everyone in heaven has an overflowing cup of God’s grace, but cups vary in size based on earthly life – everyone is still fulfilled and there is no envy, but how much one is able to receive is different based on how much they’ve opened themselves up to receiving on earth). So even after they die, saints (which is everyone in heaven) continue to grow in holiness and therefore never reach their peak because they get to continue to grow. It’s an eternity of being filled more and more with God’s love and growing closer and closer to Him.
I am still in the “most Christians” boat, because I still grasp at the things of this world. and I still look back and wish I could go back to earlier years when I didn’t care as much about God, because it was a lot easier to do what I wanted. I still do what I want a lot, but I want to please God now so I feel bad about it.
I want to love God more and give my life more to Him because I know it will lead to so much goodness, but I still don’t want to actually have to do what it takes. But I want to. Or rather I want to want to. I want my best years to be in the future, but it is difficult to give up trying to have immediate moments of selfish happiness. I keep putting my comfort before God’s will. Fortunately it’s not as often as it used to be. I’m working on it, some days I remember it’s less about the work I do and more about letting God do the work in and through me, and those days are way better.
And hopefully the best is yet to come.
